Hauppauge Heroes: Earns Top Community Award in Support of Ryan Starace and Light The Night

This year, the Hauppauge community came together in an extraordinary show of support and compassion, forming the Hauppauge Heroes to participate in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Light The Night event. This team was created to honor Ryan Starace, a brave fifth grader who has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia since he was just four years old. Ryan’s courage and determination have inspired countless individuals in Hauppauge and beyond, serving as a powerful reminder of why we fight against cancer.

Throughout the year, Hauppauge Heroes worked tirelessly to raise awareness and funds for the cause, bringing together families, friends, and neighbors in a shared mission to make a difference. Their efforts culminated in a remarkable achievement, as they raised over $15,000 for LLS. This incredible fundraising effort earned them the title of Top Community/School Team for the 2023 Light The Night on Long Island—a testament to the power of community and the impact of collective action.

Ryan’s journey has been one of resilience and hope. Diagnosed with leukemia at a young age, Ryan and his family faced tremendous challenges. However, with the support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the unwavering love of the Hauppauge community, they found strength in unity. LLS provided vital resources and support, helping the Starace family navigate their journey and inspiring others to join the fight against blood cancers.

Motivated by Ryan's story and the desire to make a difference, Hauppauge Heroes was founded with a clear mission: to unite the community in support of those facing similar battles and to contribute to life-saving cancer research. The team organized various events throughout the year, including Hauppauge Heroes Day and the Light The Night Walk, where they invited everyone to show their support by wearing Hauppauge Heroes shirts and walking together in solidarity.

On Hauppauge Heroes Day, October 18th, the community came together in a powerful display of unity. Over 800 residents wore their Hauppauge Heroes shirts, turning the town into a sea of yellow to support for those affected by cancer. This day was dedicated to honoring not only Ryan but all individuals in the community who are fighting or have lost their battle to cancer. It was a poignant reminder of the strength found in coming together and standing as one.

The Light The Night Walk on October 21st was another unforgettable event, where Hauppauge families joined thousands of others from across Long Island. Walking under the illuminated night sky, participants carried lanterns symbolizing their connection to the cause—white for survivors, red for supporters, and gold in memory of loved ones lost. The sight of the Hauppauge Heroes team, wearing their shirts and walking together, was a powerful demonstration of their commitment to fighting cancer and supporting Ryan and others like him.

Hauppauge Heroes' success is a shining example of what can be achieved when a community unites for a common cause. By raising over $15,000, they have not only provided crucial funds for LLS's research and patient support services but also sent a strong message of hope and solidarity to Ryan and all those affected by cancer.

The Hauppauge community’s dedication to making a difference in the fight against cancer is truly inspiring. Through their actions, they have shown that we are indeed stronger together. The Hauppauge Heroes are more than just a team—they are a beacon of compassion, courage, and community, lighting the way for others to follow.

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who supported Hauppauge Heroes and joined in this important mission. Together, we have made a significant impact, and together, we will continue to fight until there is a cure for all blood cancers. Thank you, Hauppauge Heroes, for showing us the power of unity and the strength of the human spirit.
